Are You Taking Care of Your Mental Health?

Enrolling in college courses is both thrilling and challenging. On one hand, higher education opens new doors of opportunity for personal growth and professional development. On the other hand, meeting the high standards of most college coursework can be daunting, potentially contributing to stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues. The following can often help to maintain good mental health.

Maintain a balanced schedule.

Avoid doing too much or too little of any activity. Maintain balance between schoolwork, employment, and social activities.

Eat healthy.

Instead of binging on caffeine, sugar, salt, and fat in snack foods, opt for meals based on the five food groups: protein, dairy, fruits and vegetables, carbohydrates, and fats. An occasional fun food is okay, but don’t overdo it.

Get exercise.

Hike, bike, or even walk at the gym or around the neighborhood to get adequate exercise. Aerobic activity promotes clear thinking, helps to focus thoughts, and stimulates creativity, in addition to keeping the body toned and in good shape.

Sleep well.

Most experts agree that seven to eight hours of restful sleep is a healthy goal. Turn off the lights and maintain a cool bedroom temperature for the best shuteye.

Enjoy a social life.

While working toward a college degree, it is also important to make time for friends and fun. Avoid risky behaviors like drinking, but spend time in enjoyable activities to help you de-stress.
