Michelle Obama’s College Experience Is All Too Familiar for Minority Students

Michelle Obama is a highly educated woman. Before she became the First Lady of the United States, she was a well-respected and admired lawyer. Michelle Obama had a college experience that was similar to many other black students and struggled to be accepted by her peers.

Michelle Obama attended Princeton and did not let her looks hold her back. She was upfront on her application including the lack of education in her family and their health problems. She was in the top 10 percent of her high school class and was a member of the National Honors Society. While she was very intelligent she still had to face being surrounded by white privileges males.

Less than eight percent of the Princeton class was black and the school and the school is not known for being popular with those from low-income areas. Michelle worked hard and was accepted into this school. While her grades were impressive she worked extra hard to show her fellow students that she belonged there. While she did not look like them and was not raised in a high-income household, her intelligence allowed her to become a success. Her college essay embraced her differences and her will to succeed.
